Yoga for Scoliosis

Yoga for Scoliosis

Learning how to adjust your practice for scoliosis is a valuable way to alleviate pain, discomfort, and general soreness that you may experience. While Yoga may not reduce or change the curvature of your spine, it can help strengthen, lengthen, and maintain the movement of your muscles, keeping you active and feeling your best. Understanding your specific curves and knowing how to modify your practice for each side is crucial, as this is often not addressed in regular classes. It can be beneficial to participate in a class where the instructor encourages you to work on your concave side again or to engage your convex side in a strengthening pose. If possible, bring your information about your curvatures to the workshop so K-Lea can assist you in remembering how to work with them effectively.

Yoga for Hips
Jun

Yoga for Hips

Whether you desire to sit in Padmasana (Lotus) position or practice poses to gain more flexibility in your hips, this workshop may assist you in this goal. Sitting in lotus, or even a comfortable cross-legged pose, is typical for meditation, Pranayama and Yogasana. There are many benefits to doing this pose. It is grounding and said to have a calming effect on the brain. It also keeps the spine straight and helps us develop good posture. When one can do this pose safely, it is excellent for the hips, ankles and knees. Some folks can easily do these poses without any preparation, but try this practice if you are in the “tight hips” category. Tightness in the hips' external rotators, adductors, glutes, hamstrings, ankles and back muscles can all be limiting. Whether or not your goal is to “get lotus,” your hips will feel less painful, lighter, and more energized. Practicing persistence, patience, loving-kindness, and intelligent sequencing can provide the soil for your lotus pose to grow or at least allow you to enjoy more easeful sitting poses.

 Yoga for the Psoas
May
24
10:30 AM10:30

Yoga for the Psoas

The Psoas is known as the fight or flight muscle and is similar to a barometer for the state of our nervous system. Experience this important muscle and how to release and strengthen it. As with most muscles, it is important that we have a balance between stability and mobility. We will explore strengthening, releasing and relaxing through Yoga poses and functional movement modalities. A tight psoas can cause postural problems, so conditioning the psoas in your yoga practice can help keep it healthy, strong, and flexible. If you spend a great deal of time sitting, this will be a key practice to incorporate into your lifestyle. This class is appropriate for all level practitioners with some previous experience.

Pelvic Floor Yoga for Pregnancy
May
3
10:30 AM10:30

Pelvic Floor Yoga for Pregnancy

• Relief for common discomforts of pregnancy
• Breathing exercises to prepare and use for labor
• Standing postures to develop strength and support of the spine
• Hip openers to release the pelvis and soften tension in the low back
• Restorative postures to relax the body and mind

What makes the Pre-Natal Yoga class unique from other classes is that it is comprised of only expectant mothers, which creates a safety and level of comfort to learn as well as share their own wisdom. Many of the poses introduced in the Pre-Natal Yoga can aid in common ailments often associated with pregnancy, especially in the third trimester. If a Yoga program is started early enough in one's pregnancy, the new mother will already be familiar, knowledgeable and comfortable with performing the postures that may prove to be the most helpful.

Pre-Natal Yoga will not necessarily provide an easier or faster birth, but it can help with increased body and breath awareness to help adjust to the demands of labor, birth and beyond. The Yoga Asana (postures) help to prepare the body for birth while Pranayama, (breath control exercises) help with preparing the mind. Both the Asana and Pranayama practices together have balancing qualities, both internally and externally, which help maintain strength and flexibility in the body as well as mind-full awareness and focus on the breath.

I have been teaching Iyengar Yoga since 1988 and have taught Pre-Natal Yoga and Mommy & Me Yoga for many years at a studio I founded in Nashville, TN. I am a mother myself and had a natural birth.
